Paradise Co., Ltd., a Korean casino operator, selected actor Lee Byung-hun as its brand ambassador to promote Paradise City (pictured), an Incheon resort complex, and other places with foreigner-only casinos internationally.
The news was announced on Tuesday and was reported that day by The Korea Times.
The media said the celebrity was chosen as a representative of the so-called "hallyu." This was a reference to the popularity of Korean pop culture, including television soap operas and K-pop music, especially in nearby Asian countries and regions.
The news outlet said a new ad for Paradise City featuring Mr. Lee will be released in April.
The Korea Times reported that Lee will also promote Paradise's other foreigner-only casino hotels located in Seoul, Incheon, Busan, and Jeju Island, respectively.
Paradise recently said its 2019 annual results showed the group's entire "Japan VIP" gambling division expanded year-on-year, accounting for 515 billion won ($434.3 million) of the nearly 1.52 trillion won casino decline achieved across all casino properties in the fourth quarter. Japan itself said it still has years to go before it gets its first casino resort.
Paradise Co's February casino sales rose 16.2% year-on-year, it said in a filing with the Korea Exchange on Tuesday.
Paradise City started in 2017 with a hotel as well as a foreigner-only casino. The complex has since been gradually adding non-game facilities. It is a venture between Paradise and Japanese entertainment giant Sega Sammy Holdings, Inc.
Some non-gaming facilities at the resort were temporarily closed on Saturday over the South Korean government's declaration that it was "at a critical moment" in the fight to contain the novel coronavirus, according to a message now posted on Paradise City's website.
Paradise City's closed non-gaming facilities include the Cimera spa, Wonderbox theme park, Chroma nightclub, and Studio Paradise media production facilities.
As of Tuesday, 516 more cases of COVID-19 related to the novel coronavirus had been confirmed in the country, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 5,328 and the death toll to 32, according to an online release from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday.
